After hip resurfacing I am rediscovering the joys of trail running in New Zealand.

You may still be able to run with a hip replacement using an appropriate running technique and with the right approach.

Exercises immediately after surgery

If your Doc says its OK then go for it

Lying in bed immediately after your hip replacement you'll feel absolutely whacked. However you may want to do something rather than just lie there and believe it or not you might be able to start your running rehab right away. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends beginning the following exercises in the recovery room, right after surgery.

Abduction exercise

Lie on your back with your legs spread slightly apart.
Slide your leg out to the side as far as you can, then back.
Repeat 10 times, three to four times a day.

Quadriceps set

Tighten your thigh muscle and try to straighten your knee.
Hold for 5 to 10 seconds
Repeat 10 times during a 10-minute period or until your thigh is tired.

Straight leg raises

Lift your leg several inches off of the bed.
Tighten your thigh muscle and keep your knee straight.
Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and lower.
Repeat until your thigh is tired.

Tinhip tip: Check with the Doc to make sure these exercises are OK in your case and be careful. If it hurts, stop.
